What:
Swim with manatees in the Florida Springs.
Who:
Perfect for all ages. After meeting at the shop, there is a short (about 20 minute) boat ride to the location. Here the water is calm and normally shallow. Crystal River Watersports has wetsuits and inflatable life vests, so you will have no problem floating on the surface as the manatees swim and play beneath you.
When:
Your best chance of seeing a manatee in Florida is during the winter months, specifically on days when a cold front has moved in. Despite their large size, manatees have very little body fat. This means they have to move into warmer waters as the temperatures drop. My trip was January 27 with the air temperature around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Where:
The Crystal River area is the only place in North America where you can legally swim with the manatees, and Crystal River Watersports knows all the best locations.
Why:
These ecotours are designed to get you in the water while keeping to Crystal River Watersports’ promise “to observe and preserve nature.” This is a perfect opportunity to have a magical encounter while keeping the manatees protected and safe.
